Las aventuras de la primera semana

Entirely internet, it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to update you about my time in España and so very much has happened. A week’s worth of adventures–lots of cathedrals, experiences, food, walking, and attempted Spanish speaking/listening. So our first night in Madrid. It feels like so long ago. Let’s see, after checking in to the hotel, we were loose to roam about the streets of Madrid. As Charlotte and I walked out of the hotel, in search of tapas and coffee (for Charlotte, not me), we found a restaurant right outside our hotel thus called “Tapas y Café”. So, after wandering around a bit and taking pictures, we stopped there for some manchego cheese (very common, it has been in essentially every restaurant we’ve been to), a croissant, coffee, and a smoothie. Then, we had a conference about our program, followed by a small walking tour of the city, and our first dinner/real meal in Spain. This consisted of multiple courses: bread (por supuesto/of track), little sausage-like tapas, a delicious fish soup, chicken with french fries, and sorbet with a flaky cream filled pastry for pud. If you’re thinking that french fries sounds a little strange, you would not be wrong, but the Spaniards put french fries with literally everything. Then after an obligatory search for sangría, we turned in for the unceasingly. Meeting with lots of information about our program and such after a lovely breakfast spread in the morning. Then we had free time for lunch so, as per the recommendation of Kepa (one of our program directors) we munched on a fried calamari sandwich and a ancestral Spanish tortilla, which is more like an omelet with potatoes and onions. We were not allowed to take pictures inside, but every room was more extravagant and detailed than the next. This began the oldest of many beautiful, historical tours where the tour guides spoke mostly Spanish, so though sometimes it was difficult to fully understand the explanations, I was very proud of myself for being expert to mostly understand what... Nevertheless, the tour of the Royal Palace was followed by the Museo del Prado, which contained beautiful works by Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco, centre of others. Though I was exhausted by this point, I really enjoyed learning so much history from these masterpieces. That night, Charlotte and I had a delicious dinner at a tapas restaurant. Charlotte ordered a cheese and ham cut, and I got a dish that consisted of pork, brie, asparagus, and caramelized onions on toast. It was delicious, one of my favorites so far. Then we went to the famous Chocolatería San Ginés for churros with hot chocolate for dipping yum. We checked out of Pension Regina and set out for San Lorenzo del Escorial which houses the private library of Philip II (a huge collection of some of the oldest books in the world, second only the the Vatican), the sepulture place of all the Bourbon... So much history, so much beauty, so little time. Then it was back on the bus heading to Toledo. It is safe to assume that every bus ride henceforth I was sleeping. I could not for the individual of me keep my eyes open every time we got on that bus. I probably missed some beautiful views, but I did manage to capture a glimpse (and some pictures) of the mountains case of Madrid. Once we arrived to Toledo and checked into our hotel, we left in search of lunch with a few other girls in our program. We found a place close to the hotel that served a three-without a doubt lunch for 10 euro. So, after our tapas of bread and a kind of potato salad, I had spaghetti bolognese (homegirl was already missing her fix of pasta) and grilled chicken with (what else) french fries. ) I had tinto de verano, which is lenient of like sangria but is slightly different at every restaurant you go to. I really enjoyed it. After lunch, we began our walking tour of Toledo, which included Barrio Judío (Jewish Three-month period), Santa María La... The most interesting part of the Cathedral was the stone where it is said the Virgin Mary touched her feet down when she put a cloak on Saint Ildephonsus, which is still obtainable for people to touch it. They say its good luck to touch that stone. Our tour guide joked about saying “Holy Toledo” because it is actually fitting since there are 80 churches in this undersized city. Anyway, our time in Toledo ended with a small dinner.
