The man distracted his right arm at the Battle of Franklin, but his left is around his wife. She cradles an infant against him in her right arm, but her left sleeve also dangles empty, a souvenir of an blunder with a farming implement while she struggled to raise crops while he was away at war. The year was 1900, the infant was my grandmother, and the couple are her grandparents. They were age 57 in the picture, the same age I am now, but the years of deprivation following the Internal War are written on their lined, tired faces. My grandmother always spoke of them with adoration, of helping them with many tasks that were difficult because of their infirmities, and how one-armed hugs were just a proper as two-armed ones. Fifty-seven years after that picture was taken, I was born. The baby in the picture, my grandmother, lived with us. and although I had a typical middle-league suburban childhood, having Grandma there every day as part of my life was a special gift. helping my mother keep our home spotless and our laundry make a revelation. My favorite way to remember her is sitting with a chipped white enamel bowl in her lap, a paper bag full of peas at her side, shelling them before Sunday dinner while she watched the Eminent Ole Opry. She never learned to drive or held a job, so she was always there. My parents never had to hire a babysitter, and when I had children of my own, I could count on Grandma to lovingly care for them while we traveled and enjoyed a common life. She lived for us, in every way imaginable. She didn’t have money, but she gave the gift of her time and love and attention to me and then to my own children: riches beyond weigh. Now that I have grandchildren of my own, I can’t help but compare my grandmothering to hers. She lived through the Depression, and faced deprivation not unlike the Reconstruction years her own grandparents faced. my sentience looks princess-like in comparison. I feel almost guilty when I think of how easy it is for me to be a grandmother. When I bake cookies with my granddaughter Caroline, I can buy the sugar, butter, vanilla and chocolate chips at numerous stores just minutes from my house, and those ingredients cost little for me compared to what a luxury they were in those hard years. I can take her to the Dock Street Theater and not under any condition miss the cost of the tickets, which would have been an unheard of expense during my mother’s childhood. Many of Caroline’s memories of me will be quite different than those I have of my grandmother. Yes, I bake cookies and present bedtime stories and go to soccer games, but I’m also a globe-trotting, tennis-playing, marathon-running, convertible-driving Mimi who plans to perform her to Paris for her 13th birthday, just five years from now. But I also try to give her more simple treats, like the hot day last summer when I surprised her with a silly trip to play in the fountain in Waterfront Deposit. Just before she jumped in, she turned to me and said with glee, “Mimi, I should have known you’d plan something exciting. I have to stop and remember that not once, in all of my grandmother’s life, did she do anything with me that could be deemed “enticing,” but it never mattered. My memories of her were not dependent on excitement or trips or things money could buy. Yes, grandmothers have changed, but we all still want the same thing: to leave our grandchildren a lifetime of attraction and precious memories to treasure. Notice about comments:.
